Earlier this year the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA) announced the winners of its National Stars of Excellence program for 2005 - and Rinker Materials was one of them.
Rinker Materials’ Dogwood quarry in Georgia was awarded two stars for its About Face Showplace award in 2004 and Community Relations Pinnacle award in 2005.
NSSGA’s National Stars of Excellence is presented to those operations earning two or more of any of the following awards in a calendar year: About Face Showplace; Community Relations Pinnacle Award; Environmental Eagle Gold Award; or Large, Medium or Small Operation Lowest Incidence Rate Safety Award. Each operation is awarded a number of stars corresponding to the number of awards won (two, three, and four) and is identified as a Two, Three, or Four Star Award winner.
The 2005 Community Relations Award entries highlight the outstanding outreach and stewardship activities NSSGA members practice in their communities. Rinker Materials’ Dogwood quarry received the Pinnacle award, the highest level of achievement, for its continuous involvement with the community.
Dogwood quarry employees regularly take the time to host community picnics or open its doors to schools for onsite tours. Quarry manager Chad Cornwell also visits local schools, educating students on the mining process.
The community relations program began in 1989 to recognise aggregate producers whose community involvement and support activities have enhanced the public’s perception of the aggregates industry in general and the public image of the individual producer’s aggregate operation in particular. There are several different levels of awards including the Pinnacle Award, Excellence in Community Relations and Community Achievement, Certificates of Achievement and the “Toast of the Town” Award.
“What an outstanding year 2005 has been for the aggregates industry,” says NSSGA President and CEO Joy Wilson. “With the incredible achievements our winners have made in the fields of community relations, safety, environmental stewardship and operation beautification, we are reminded of the important role the aggregates industry plays in ensuring a greater quality of life in America.”
Rinker Materials’ Davenport sand mine and Brooksville quarry received the prestigious Environmental Eagle Silver Award for Outstanding Achievement from the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association. They were awarded for recognition of their performance as environmental stewards during the past year.
The Environmental Eagle awards program was created in 1992 to provide national recognition for aggregate producers that meet and exceed technical environmental and regulatory requirements. There were 39 entries from across the US in the 2005 award program.
