Thanks to its good looks, Rinker Materials’ Macon quarry was recently honoured through the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association’s (NSSGA) oldest awards program—About Face—and received the accolade in early March.
The award is given to aggregate producers who have made constructive and positive efforts to enhance the aesthetic appearance of their operations.
The team at Macon quarry further impressed the NSSGA with their relationship with the local community and also won the Pinnacle Community Relations Award for 2006.
Award winners demonstrate what it is to be a good neighbour and corporate citizen. This includes community involvement, committing to service and support, and actively teaching neighbours about the importance of aggregates in daily life.
With the two awards (About Face Show place and Community Relations Pinnacle Award) firmly under the quarry’s belt, it was also awarded two stars of excellence from the NSSGA.
NSSGA’s National Stars of Excellence program began in 2001 and is presented to those operations earning two or more of any of the following awards over a five-year period: About Face Showplace; Community Relations Pinnacle Award; Environmental Eagle Gold Award; Large, Medium or Small Operation Lowest Incidence Rate Safety Award. Each operation is awarded a number of stars corresponding to the number of awards won (two, three or four) and is identified as a Two-, Three- or Four-Star Award winner.
Congratulations Macon quarry!
The Florida Materials Division team in Central Florida is getting innovative with recycled concrete - and this innovation is not only reducing costs, it’s also increasing revenue.
To dispose of waste concrete, it is normally poured out in strips to dry and then hauled away by a third party to be crushed offsite and re-sold as aggregate.
Reducing this expense, the team in Central Florida negotiated a contract with a crushing company to crush onsite at a designated Rinker Materials plant rather than offsite. The crushing company now hauls in waste concrete from other Rinker Materials plants as well as from competitors who also require disposal services.
In addition, the crushing company now pays Rinker Materials for onsite space rental and a negotiated per ton fee for all the recycled concrete, which is re-sold as aggregate. With this cost reduction and revenue earnings, the Rinker Materials plant with the crushing operation improved its plant costs by 21 per cent compared to the prior year.
“Not only has the onsite crushing operation become a steady revenue source for our operations, but recycled concrete is also environmentally friendly,” says central region manager Tony DiPietro.
With the success of this revenue generating crushing operation in Central Florida, other Rinker Materials locations are being considered for similar operations.
